Drivers Still Breaking the Law

March 31st, 2009

Despite recent proposals and rhetoric from the Government, according to a recent poll commissioned by Moneysupermarket, a fifth of drivers in the UK admit to driving on public roads without car insurance cover. The current penalities for those guilty of committing such an offence include on the spot fines of up to £200, having up to six points added to your driving licence and the impoundment of your car.

Worryingly, it’s reported that nearly two fifths of young drivers have admitted to this type of driving offence, and in the battle of the sexes, a whopping 25% of men confess to not providing themselves with adequate car insurance cover compared to 16% of women drivers.

What this survey illustrates is that there are still insufficient deterrants in place, particularly in London, the South West and East Anglia where the rate of incidents of driving without insurance is highest. But it also remains to be seen whether all of the current penalities are actually enforced in every case, regardless of geographical location, so it could mean the insurance industry and Government still have a lot of work to do in this area!

Car makes and their love value

Diamond Car Insurance
The Quotesnow Team thought they would share some fun research conducted by Diamond Car Insurance concerning how your car maybe attracting the opposite sex!

According to a survey of over 3,000 people conducted by the women’s car insurer, over 36% admitted they would be more attracted to you because of the car you drive, does this ring any bells? Other interesting findings revealed that 10% would still date someone they thought was really ugly provided they drove a fantastic car. As far as the sex’s are concerned, men appear to be much more superficial than women as twice as many said they would date someone ugly just because of their vehicle.

So as far as men are concerned, what are those all important car makes that could increase the number of dates you go on? Well not surprisingly Aston Martin, which is probably the James Bond effect, is the number one car, followed by Ferrari, Audi, BMW and Lamborghini. For women trying to attract the man of their dreams, the cars to have are a Ferrari followed by an Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Bentley and BMW.

A word of caution, unfortunately the worst car makes to attract a person of the opposite sex were Seat followed by a Chevrolet and Skoda, perhaps, the marketing agencies of these car makes have taken note?

Age Descrimination Within Insurance

March 4th, 2009

It is a fact that both young and elderly drivers pay more for their car insurance, but now that a government bill plans to bar age descrimination, that could all change! However, the ABI (Association of British Insurers) claim that not being allowed to take driver’s ages into account could lead to a steep rise in premiums, therefore having a negative impact on every category of motorist in the UK.

Statistically and historically, the riskiest groups to insure are young drivers between the ages of 17 and 25, and older drivers, particularly those in their 80’s. And while government watchdogs have, in the past been sceptical of the price differences charged for insuring men and women drivers, insurers were successful in proving that while male drivers had fewer car accidents than their female counterparts, their repair costs were greater because the accidents suffered by women typically happened at slower speeds.

The ABI argues that it could be deemed unfair to other categories of drivers if insurance companies are not allowed to take age into consideration when assessing the potential risks posed by their elderly and young customers, warning that this may not only apply to motorists but also those people seeking to purchase travel, home and a wide variety of other insurance products.
