It had its spectacular launch in April 1985, when Direct Line became the first UK car insurance company to use the telephone as its major communication channel, becoming paperless, able to sell and administer its policies by phone. Since then the Direct Line 'Red Phone on Wheels' has remained one of the top car insurance brands in the UK. As far back as 1993 they had become the biggest private car insurance company in the UK and have grown ever since into new markets of home, pet and travel insurances as well as acquiring the Green Flag breakdown service and providing a range of financial products. Direct line have also successfully developed their car insurance business internationally, into Spain, Germany, Italy and America.

Direct Line car insurance offers a 10% discount for buying online and is available in fully comprehensive, third party and third party, fire and theft. There are additional savings available if you purchase breakdown cover* at the same time as your car insurance and as an introductory discount on your home insurance. You can pay your premiums monthly by installments*.

In the case of a repair if you accept Direct Line's qpproved repairer your car will be collected, repaired with a 3 year guarantee, cleaned outside and valeted and delivered back to you. There is, of course a 24 claims help line to assist you through the process. As an optional extra to your comprehensive car insurance policy you can add Guaranteed Hire Car Cover so that you are mobile for up to 14 days while your car is being repaired, this even applies if your vehicle is written off or stolen (but not to windscreen damage).

You can use the insured vehicle for business purposes at no extra cost provided you or your employer are not in anyway connected with any of the following: the entertainment and fashion industry, professional sports, foreign service or diplomatic personal, scrap or salvage merchants, general dealers or market traders, mini-cab drivers or controllers.

You can build up or transfer up to 65% no claims discount after 5 years (70% if you're over 50 years old) and this can be protected after 4 years* for a small additional premium. You can of course lower your Direct Line car insurance premium further by agreeing to pay a higher excess.

Direct Line's car insurance quote process is slick and you should be able to obtain an online quote if you are a permanent U.K resident, are at least 17 years of age and hold a valid driving licence. The vehicle must be owned and registered by you and must not be modiied in any way. It should generally be a UK specification vehicle unless the vehicle description in the quote specifically states 'import'.
