Information for owners interested in getting car insurance from Tesco

Tesco car insurance is part of the Tesco Personal Finance brand and is provided and administered by UK Insurance which is in turn a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland, the third largest insurance group in the UK.

They provide third party fire and theft and fully comprehensive car insurance, both of which attract a 10% discount for buying online. It is worth noting that fully comprehensive cover only is available for vehicles calued at more than £5,000. Other benefits include business use, 24 hour claims helpline and vehicle sharing as standard, whilst Motor Legal Protection and Temporary Replacement Car are optional extras.

You should be able to obtain an online Tesco car insurance quote provided you are the owner and registered keeper of the vehicle and you are resident, and keep the vehicle at your permanent address in the UK (except Northern Ireland). You must hold a full UK driving licence and all drivers must be permanently resident in the UK and aged between 17 and 79 at the beginning of the car insurance policy. The vehicle must be an UK model or built to UK specifications* and it must not be modified*.

You can carry forward your no claim discount (NCD) from your previous insurance company if that policy finished within the last 2 years. You can protect it after you have reached 4 years NCD, which means you can have 1 claim in any year (or up to 2 claims in any 3 year period) and you will retain your hard earned discount.

As an insurance optional extra, Motor Legal Protection* is available which means if you have a no fault car accident the legal team will assist you to recover financial consequences of the incident that are not covered by the policy such as loss of earnings, personal injury and your voluntary excess.

If your car become unusable due to an incident covered by your insurance a Temporary Replacement Car* is also an optional extra. Tesco car insurance will provide you with a 1.0 litre (or similar hire car) for up to 14 days after the incident. Even if it has been stolen or written off the replacement car will be made available for up to 3 days.

If you agree it at the time of taking out the policy Business Use* by the policyholder and their spouse (if named on the policy) is included provided you use the car in accordance with your insurance section called "limitations as to use" and their or their employer's business is not connected in any way with certain prescribed industries* which includes the entertainment and fashion industry, scrap or salvage, market traders mini-cab drivers or controllers and use in connection with the motor trade in specifically excluded.

A dedicated 24 hour claims hotline is available to provide assistance whenever needed and connection to their national Network of Repairers which offers a full three year guarantee using only manufacturer approved parts.

You are permitted to receive contributions from passengers if the use is social or similar as part of a Vehicle Sharing* arrangement, to and from work for example. Provided the vehicle is not constructed or modified to carry more than 8 passengers (excluding the driver) use your vehicle for
